Surfing in Phuket at Kata Beach
Surfing in Phuket

Surfing in Phuket in the summer season in Phuket has actually several positive aspects. Aside from the weather not being really that bad, the cheaper hotel rates, less tourists crowds and beautiful green lush vegetation, this is also a great time to enjoy surfing!

While from November to May the sea is always totally flat, from mid-May we start to often have nice big waves on Phuket’s west coast. Kata Beach is one of the best for surfing in Phuket because it’s probably the one with the highest chances of good waves almost every day and suitable for both beginners and experienced surfers. The quality of the waves is often not too much affected by the tide level, though normally best to surf at mid tide.

For the first timers there is a Surf Shop / Schools located on the southern end of Kata Beach, they offer lessons by professional certified instructor starting from 1,000 THB per person including rental board for the whole day, so people can keep practising by themselves after the lessons are done. It’s very important to get the basics explained by an instructor to learn how to do it safely and to understand the waves, weather conditions and currents. All the rest is just a lot of practice to keep improving your skills and your fun. Be aware that surfing is extremely addictive! More about Rental and Course at

For the experienced surfers who haven’t brought along their own board it’s possible to rent one at the shops mentioned above. They have a wide range of boards available such as long boards, short boards, boogie boards, skim boards and paddle boards starting from 150 THB for one hour and getting cheaper and cheaper for longer rental packages.

On those rare days when the sea is flat, or during the high season it’s still possible to enjoy the artificial waves at Surf House Kata.

Aside from Kata Beach people can enjoy good surfing also at Nai Harn, Kamala, Surin, Bang Tao beaches though the conditions there are more unpredictable due to moving sandbanks and other variables. Kalim Bay, north of Patong, often offers the best waves on Phuket although since it’s a shallow reef break rather than a beach break so it’s more suitable for experienced surfers.
