Rassada Pier ferry terminal

Rassada Pier, in Phuket town is the gateway to paradise. As the discerning traveller makes their way through Phuket town’s dodgy side streets and smelly and seemingly unending dirty roads, it soon becomes apparent that the docks are not too far away, but paradise; really?

The aromas that indicate boats, docks, harbours and piers are the same worldwide. A strong whiff of ocean, combined with a distant yet distinct smell of dead fish and diesel oil, is not everyone’s indication of paradise.

But when one arrives to Phuket Towns Rassada Pier, it’s hard not to get caught up in the excitement. But for most, Rassada Pier means a trip out to one of the islands in Phang Nga bay. These ferries are by far the most convenient and  least inexpensive way of reaching the Islands around Phuket..

Everyone here is going somewhere, whether it’s to Koh Yao Yai, Krabi, Koh Lanta or the glorious Phi Phi Islands There is hustle and bustle, backpacks flying onto the ferries, people rushing to catch their boat, others shouting, others waving their last goodbyes.

All manner of boats leave from here, speed boats, long tail boats, ferry boats, private charter boats, across the other side of the pier you can see all the fishing boats getting prepared for a night on the open Andaman sea.

Being the main departure point for the surrounding islands, most of the large passenger ferries leave from Rassada pier. The pier itself is on the outskirts of Phuket town and takes only half an hour from most of the resorts to reach. There is a large car park and the place has 24 hours surveillance, so parking with assurance is certain and it costs only a small fee per day.

There are several little vendors there selling hot and cold drinks as well snacks, just show your ticket to any of the attendants and they will tell you which ferry you should board, find a seat, relax and before you know you will be at your destination.

Most of the ferries have three decks, the two lower decks have air con, with the upper top deck used as the sun deck. Word of warning: be careful, as you cruise towards your destination, it’s easy to forget the sunblock, and with the breeze, sunburn is not noticed till it’s too late.
