More about Tiger Kingdom Phuket

Tiger Kingdom Phuket

However must say that tigers are still wild animals and must be treated with the up most respect at all times. Visitors are encouraged to pet and play gently with them, especially the cubs; they are extremely playful and like any young animal are extremely inquisitive.

We must stress, unlike many places around the world that house, these beautiful creatures are not drugged or tranquillized in any way. Like all cats they do sleep a lot sometimes up to eighteen hours a day, if you are lucky you can observe how the trained handlers play with them.

Tigers are the largest member of the cat species and can reach a length of over three metres and can weigh in excess of three hundred and fifty kilos in the wild. And in the wild, tigers are the ultimate predators and prey on many different kinds of animals such as moose, deer species, pigs, cows, horses, buffalos and goats.

They are territorial and solitary in the wild and have large areas which have frequently brought them closer to humans as they are indigenous to populated areas of the world, this has seen over the last hundred years a massive decline in their numbers.

Tigers once roamed free over much parts of Asia, from the gateway of Turkey right across the entire continent to east coast of Russia. Unfortunately they have lost over ninety percent of their wildlife territory. They can be found in the wild in such places like Java and eastern Asia all the way up to the snow tigers in Siberia.

The tiger population in the wild on a global scale is estimated to be around three thousand five hundred to four thousand. This number is down form the estimated one hundred thousand at the turn of the twentieth century and one of the main reasons that the tiger population has been decimated is due to habitat destruction and poaching.

The Tiger Kingdom Phuket is an eye-catching, brand new tiger enclosure situated close to Patong hill next to the Go-Kart track in Kathu. The sanctuary is built on four acres of land and cost one hundred million Thai baht to complete.

Tiger Kingdom has its critics too; with many environmentalists claim that these animals should be left to roam free and keeping them locked up is a terrible way for them to live. That said, the Tigers are will looked after and have never lived in the wild and they are really well cared for and loved by their experienced handlers.

Once you arrive at Tiger Kingdom you will be met by staff made noticeable by their orange shirts, these guys will lead you through all the necessary paperwork that needs to be filed out in order for you to meet the tigers.

There is a waiver to be sign exonerating Tiger Kingdom in the unlikely event that an accident occurs, this is a general standard procedure and which you have to do for other major attractions such as the Bungee jumping in Kathu or Zip-lining in the forest.

There are different price ranges to choose from as you decide which size of tigers you would like to see, from a small fee where you can just spend time with a single tiger, or a full pass where you have unrestricted access to all of them. There is always a professional photographer on hand to take the quality photographs.

Of course there are guide lines in place which must be adhered to at all times; and before you are allowed entry you must remove your foot ware and leave any other belongings in the lockers provided, you will also be required to wash your hands thoroughly too. If you would like to take a camera inside it is allowed, however the flash must be turned off at all times.

Tiger Kingdom is mainly constructed of concrete; this enables the place to be very easily kept clean and you may be surprised just how spotless it is inside. The Tigers each have their own pool to play in while they bask in the tropical sunshine. They are fed at 7pm sharp every day, and if you want to avoid the crowds and the hottest part of the day it best then to go early the opening time is 9am.
